Scent
Sweet, floral, herbal + spicy… depending on the season. Spring + Summer are floral + herbal, while Autumn + Winter are herbal + spicy. It’s amazing how these smell exactly like the seasons they represent. Totally nostalgic! Clay Mask smells slightly rose-like scent when wet.
Texture
Steams are dried, loose herbs, flowers + spices. Clay mask is a dry powder.
Pros
- The steams are SO pretty + they smell ahhh-mazing!
- Mask does as it says +really draws the gunk out!
- No preservatives since everything comes dry!
- Excellent quality.
Cons
- They’re loose herbs, so clean up can be a pain.
- Steam Sampler packages weren’t resealable.
- The mask can stain towels, so use something old that you don’t care about.
Recommend + Repurchase
Yes, yes, + YES! Facials are my #1 beauty ritual, + Fig + Yarrow’s Herbal Steams + Black Clay Mask are an amazing addition to my routine! I make time for them at least once or twice a week, + let me tell you… there’s nothing that clears up your complexion, quite like steaming your face + applying a mask right after!
I’ve used facial masks for as long as I can remember, but started steaming after weening myself off Proactive a few years ago, {aka, crack for your face!}, when my skin threw a fit + I needed something STAT! So, I began using Dr. Hauschka’s Clarifying Steam Bath {which I loved!}, but couldn’t afford the habit. Being the Kitchen Beautician I am, I began making my own Facial Steams because I didn’t know of any other skin-specific products like this at the time. So, I was excited when I cam across these babies!
I steam for several reasons: I LOVE makeup + wear a lot of it! I’m always trying so many different products for the sake of reviewing, that sometimes I just need to give my skin a break + sweat it out, before trying something new. {I know. Rough job, but somebody’s gotta do it, Lol. #beautybloggerprobs}. In addition, I also have major hormonal acne issues post Cancer, with Estrogen Dominance {I didn’t take Tamoxifen, remember?}. Sooo… the steams really do the trick in detoxing, + the mask gives it the extra kick with it’s magnetic pulling-powers!
As for the Steams themselves… I love all of them in the set {SO pretty!}, but after a blind-sniff test, I apparently tend to lean more towards Fall + Winter. I can honestly say, these are so vibrant + fragrant, + that I truly appreciate every single element that went into them. Totally gorg!
FYI, I only needed about 1/2 TBSP per steam, + I got about 7 – 8 uses per bag. So, in total, I got about 30 little tea bags from the set of sample set of all 4. Yes, I said Tea Bags. Since I’m not a fan of floaty things + prefer easy clean-up, I took about 1/2 TBSP + used Fill Your Own Tea Bags to make little steam packets. I’ll write more about that soon + link it here when I do. In the meantime – if you want to do what I did, just follow the filling + sealing instructions on the package.
One thing I wanted to mention about the Steam Sampler though, was that when I initially opened the packages, I thought about cutting them, but was hoping to reseal them. So, I tried to gently tear where they were sealed with the label. BIG mistake! 2 out of the 4 completely ripped {to shreds!} down the center, + herbs flew everywhere like confetti! On top of that, the bags were also super-staticky, making it impossible to get what was left in them, out. Needless to say – I wish they came in resealable bags, so I didn’t have to find something else to store them in after opening, + so that I could save the rest for my next facial.
About the Black Clay Mask… love, love LOVE the the drawing intensity of it! I’ve mixed it with water {where it dries completely}, organic yogurt {somewhat dries}, + with Wedderspoon Manuka Honey {my preference, + stays just moist enough not to pull!}. Definitely up there on my list of faves, + looking forward to trying the rest of their masks + doing a comparison!
So, here’s how I roll with facials on the reg… If I have the time, I’ll do an all-out steam sesh, which lasts anywhere from 10-15 minutes + mask time. If I don’t, I opt for just a mask during / after a shower when my pores are already open. Obvi, the steaming ritual + mask together provide way better results, without a doubt.
To save time, I try to multi-task. While I’m bringing my water to a boil, I set up my “spa” with: a large bath towel + a large, glass or stainless steel bowl – with my steam packet in the bottom. I also mix my mask at that time to allow it to swell. Then, I pour the hot water over the herbs, set a timer, + drape the towel over my head to create a tent. Afterwards, I gently exfoliate + then immediately apply my mask.
Bottom line, these are definitely worth checking out, especially if you love pampering yourself with a facial! These are my first F + Y products… + I’m totally in LOVE! Thanks Fig + Yarrow!

November 22, 2014 at 3:38 pmFig+Yarrow sounds absolutely gorgeous! I am definitely eyeing the Black Clay Mask. I love the idea of mixing it with raw honey, which I also am a fan of.

June 21, 2016 at 4:43 pmhi! i found this blog by accident and it is great! one thing though, i do the same ‘spa’ ritual as you do but i really recommend against exfoliating after a steam! opening the pores and then exfoliating can really damage the skin. I recommend doing it vice versa.
otherwise everything looks and sounds amazing

June 22, 2016 at 2:18 pmThanks so much for your input Thrudur! :) I also sometimes reverse it as well – depending on how gritty, or gentle the exfoliator is. <3
