This is one of those things that I didn’t realize how much I needed, until I actually had one. I got the 8″ free-standing countertop one, but it also comes in a wall mounted version too, as well as varying sizes + levels of magnification. It definitely took a little for me to get used to at first – but I love how it’s just the right amount of magnification, + that I didn’t experience any crazy distortion like I did with other magnifying mirrors I’ve used in the past.
Personally this is the first SimpleHuman product I’ve ever owned, + if I’m being completely honest, $200 for a makeup mirror just seems so astronomical to me. I have to tell you though that the quality is impressive! It’s super-sturdy + really well built, which is FAB, because I intend on keeping this for a very long time. I also love the design of this so much more than other brands on the market – simple, yet sophisticated – totally the look I was going for.
One thing I wanted to mention is that the vanity I keep this on is pretty tall {making the mirror almost eye-level for me}, so I’m not sure if this would be a problem if it were used it on a shorter surface or not – as I haven’t done that yet. I love the convenience of being able to adjust it however I need it though, depending on what I’m doing.
Aside from the price, my only real peeves are 1. with the sensor + 2. with the on / off button – neither of which are deal-breakers for me. I love that it has a sensor, but it’s really sensitive – more so with going off, than going on. If you look away from the mirror for just a second to grab a makeup brush or something – the light goes out. Then you have to wait for it to go back on – and if you’re in a hurry, this can be super-annoying, especially when it happens repeatedly throughout my makeup routine… even when I’m trying to be conscious of how far away I am.
So I bet you’re thinking no biggie, I’ll just keep it on instead of using the sensor, right? Wrong. There’s no option for that + it drives me absolutely batshit! Ok, let me clarify… there is a button to keep the sensor on, but no way to turn it on + keep it on- on. You can turn it completely off though. I would just think that an on button would be a given, especially for the price… and, apparently, I’m not the only one. In fact, I googled it, because I originally thought mine was broken, but it turns out some people actually use a piece of tape to cover the sensor so that it stays on, until they manually turn it off by the button. Definitely some smart cookies out there, but I’m not sure I want to stare at a piece of tape on this gorg mirror all the time. So, I was a little disappointed with the design in that aspect.
Another thing is that I don’t keep my sensor on all the time – I turn it completely off when I’m done using it. Therefore, I wish the on / off button were on the top of the base, instead of under it – so I didn’t have to pick up the entire thing to turn it on, every time I want to use it.
While I still rely on a bigger, wall mounted mirror to do most of my makeup, this is a great addition + really helps me see the finer details I’d apparently been missing all along. The lighting is spot-on when I don’t have the right natural light, + it’s a God-send for tweezing, waxing, brow shaping, color-correcting + concealing, applying liquid liner, etc.
All in all, I absolutely love this mirror, + highly recommend it! I can’t get over how much I love it + use it on a daily basis! If you’re in the market for one, definitely check this one out!
Buy it!
